You may have recently made the shift from employment, or you may have been running your own consultancy or freelance business for a while. Consultancy and freelancing needs you to think and act in a completely different way. A complete overhaul of how you think is necessary to make sure your business is successful. I’m here to help you with this.
What is mindset?
I was never really sure what exactly mindset meant until I had a business coach for my previous consultancy and started studying hypnotherapy and learning more about the mind. This taught me more about our thoughts and how critical they are to what we achieve. I had come across many of these concepts on my spiritual path, but I’d never understood how to apply them, until I studied mindset in depth. This learning was lifechanging and I had the benefit of applying the learning to my own consultancy business, leveraging huge benefits. I’ve outlined the areas in this blog post.
Shifting the employee mindset
It took me a few years to shift the employee mindset, and with the benefit of hindsight, I can see how much this had held me back. Having an employee mindset had many impacts on my behaviour, including always putting the client in the position of control, rather than seeing us both as equal partners in the relationship, not taking enough control when it came to getting invoices paid, and working hours specified by the client, rather than worked for me.
It has taken time, experience and personal mindset study to recalibrate these behaviours, but the impact it has had on me, my ability to deliver and client satisfaction has been incredible, This is why I recommend either studying mindset or having a specific mindset coach as a freelancer to help you on this journey.
How to develop your mindset for freelance life
There are some key areas that you need to completely shift your thinking on, so that you create maximum success for your consultancy or freelance business. the critical thing is to be aware of your current thinking around your business, and identify how they need to change so you are aligned with your goals.
Here are some key areas to consider and develop your mindset around – it’s an ongoing progress, so notice how far you have come, rather than how far you have to go.
Set goals and always be progressing towards them
What do you want to achieve for your business – and are you actively moving towards them, or is each day just a shuffle for survival? Being strategic about where you are going and what you want to achieve is the quickest way to really leverage freelance success. The best goals are the ones that really challenge you to develop new perspectives or ways of doing things.
Keep building your self-image
How you see yourself is critical to your success, so you need to build a self-image that is aligned with your business goals. Ideally it needs to be centred on being a successful consultant or freelancer if that is what you are aiming at. You are what you think about, so keep developing your self-image through visualisation and journaling.
Relationships with clients
When I think back to my initial clients as a freelancer, I can see how I used to I used to allow clients to take the lead – basically I was acting like an employee rather than a consultant with expertise. This had all sorts of impacts, such as developing a brief that I didn’t feel was deliverable, being managed by clients, and accepting day rates that were too low.
Use mindset to take control of your client relationships – you are equals that are working together to deliver a specific piece of work and you set the price and the conditions, not the other way around.
Constantly be looking to improve what you do and how you do it
Constantly improving your service offer and customer experience is critical to building longevity into your business. It’s the best way of keeping clients loyal, and coming back time after time.
Focus on building an efficient business by creating good structures and processes in the background that enable your delivery to be efficient, and give your clients assurance and confidence or your delivery. If you need to outsource your processes to free up your time, find someone to work that shares your values.
Ask your clients for feedback when you complete projects for them, be self-reflective as well – what do you want to improve? Be efficient and always looking to improve what you do and how you do it.
Relationship with money
You are in control and you set the rates – you can always be open to negotiating with clients but ultimately you decide what you will work for. You need to get comfortable with asking for what you want – the more you do it, the easier it becomes, and this is tied in with your self-image. Do you see yourself as a consultant that charges the higher rates, attracts the best clients and gets their invoices paid on time? If not, you need to develop this into your self-image script. It will be worth it because having lumpy cashflow is the biggest drain on wellbeing and business time – you need to realise that only you are responsible for it and how you manage it.
My previous life of bid consultancy demanded a lot of time and mental effort – until I started to apply the mindset principals that I’d learnt. Then I found that I could get twice as much done in half the time – I was working far less than I did before, with time in the week to spare for other things. This was absolutely my idea of a dream work life, and I know have the time for the daily walks I’ve become well-known for. Manage your time – and if you want help with this, speak to me.
Take control of your personal development
Take your personal development seriously – always be learning and always be planning your skills and identifying the gaps. See yourself as someone who is well-skilled and always looking to be at the forefront of the industry that you work in. Have a budget for personal development, take advantage of the free stuff on offer, and always be learning on the job by pushing yourself out of your comfort zone as much as you can – this is where the real growth is.
